IMEE APOLOGIZES OVER SON BORGY MANOTOC BRAWL
MANILA, January 15, 2003 (STAR) The family of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos issued a public apology yesterday after one of his grandsons was caught up in a bar brawl in Boracay that left a young man hospitalized.
"I hereby apologize to the family of Mr. Fong over what happened," Ilocos Norte Rep. Imee Marcos, the deposed presidentís eldest daughter, told dzBB radio.
Physician Ray Fong told the station that his son was treated in hospital for cigarette burns on his back and other injuries after the young man and his friends brawled with Imee Marcosí 19-year-old son "Borgy" Manotoc and his friends.
He said the brawl occurred as the two groups of young men spent their New Yearís holidays on Boracay resort-island in Aklan.
"I was thankful that my son got out of that island alive," said the elder Fong, who said his family would not press charges against "Borgy," a model and student.
The victimís father said he called up the station to set the record straight because of earlier press reports that Borgy Manotoc had merely acted as a peacemaker.
"Thatís not true. He was not breaking up the fight. He was heavily involved in it," the father added.
Imee Marcos said she had summoned her son and his friends to explain their behavior, and has written a letter to the mother of one of the young men who she said had reportedly instigated the fight.
"What they did was sheer stupidity," the legislator said. "I hope it will not affect their future."
The Marcos clan fled to US exile in Hawaii in 1986 after a bloodless, military-backed popular revolt ended his 20-year rule.
After the former leader died in Honolulu in 1989, his widow Imelda Marcos and the rest of clan trickled back into the Philippines as the successor government mounted a worldwide hunt and litigation to reclaim up to $10 billion in assets that the family allegedly siphoned off from state coffers.
Former beauty queen Imelda Marcos gained international notoriety for her extensive footwear collection.
