NEW ZAMBO CITY COLISEUM CENTER OF ZAMBOANGA CITY DAY TOMORROW
Zamboanga City, Feb. 25, 2002 - Tomorrow, February 26, all roads here will lead to the newly built Zamboanga City Coliseum in Barangay Tetuan, the center of the grand celebration of Zamboanga City Day.
The P130-million Coliseum, which can seat 15,000, will be the venue of a series of activities to be conducted in commemoration of the historic day when the first set of city officials took their oath of office on Feb. 26, 1937.
To highlight the festivities of the day, earlier declared a non-working holiday here, is the visit of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who will be the guest of honor and speaker at a program to be held at the Coliseum.
Upon her arrival here, the President will inspect the Ayuda Badjao Livelihood and Housing Project in Sitio Maasin, Barangay Caragasan.
She will then proceed to the Coliseum for the Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga (Zamboanga City Day) program.
Before the President’s speech, there will be a presentation of Zamboanga’s glorious past by Councilor Maria Isabelle Climaco, a choral rendition by the Zamboanga City High School Main Choir, a cultural dance to be performed by the El Pueblo Cultural Dance Troupe of the same school, and the presentation of awards to outstanding city government workers by City Vice Mayor Erico Basilio Fabian.
The President will be introduced by Rep. Celso L. Lobregat of the Lone District of Zamboanga City, while City Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat will give the welcome address.
In the evening, the President will administer the oaths of office to the members of the Board of Trustees of the Regional Executives Association of Western Mindanao to be held at the Mansion House at the Southern Command Headquarters in Barangay Upper Calarian.
Since February 19, the city government and private sector groups have joined hands in the holding of various activities showcasing the rich culture, tradition and arts of the Zamboanguenos.
Zamboanga became a chartered city by virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 39 dated Oct. 12, 1936, during the celebration of the town fiesta in honor of Our Lady of the Pillar.
But the formal inauguration of Zamboanga as a city was on Feb. 26, 1937 when Hon. Nicasio Valderrosa was installed as the city’s first mayor along with five other members of the city council.
Fifty years later, or on Oct. 15, 1986, the Sangguiniang Panlungsod approved Resolution No. 699 formally declaring every February 26 as "El Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga."
The island of Basilan was part of Zamboanga City then, making it the largest city in the world in terms of total land area, at 278,000 hectares.
In 1948, Basilan was separated to become Basilan Province under Republic Act No. 283.
Zamboanga City played a central role in Southern Mindanao as a center of trade and commerce, transportation and communication, education, government, and religion since early-recorded history.
Through the years, the city further developed into the growth center that it is today.
