AMADO CORTEZ REPLACED AS SAN FRANCISCO CONSUL GEN
Manila, June 9, 2001 - Ailing Philippine Consul General to San Francisco Amado Cortez has already been replaced by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
The DFA has assigned Philippine Consul General to Guam Delia Menez Rosal to take over the post despite opposition from the department's employees association.
Rosal formally assumed the position last month.
The DFA said Cortez is already unfit to perform his duties in the consulate due to a lingering illness.
Cortez, 77, was first reported to have been suffering from tuberculosis last year.
The actor-turned-diplomat started serving as consul to San Francisco during the time of former President Corazon Aquino. He was promoted as consul general by deposed President Joseph Estrada. The DFA recalled him when President Arroyo took over the government in January.
"He was supposed to be replaced five months ago, but he was given a grace period so he could pay for his medical bills," a source from the department said.
It was earlier reported that since his health started to deteriorate, Cortez had already used all his leave credits and had exceeded his allowable health insurance.
