WHY HONOR STUDENT RUFA MAE PLAYS DUMB
Quezon City, April 9, 2001 - Everything is coming up roses for Rufa Mae Quinto, both in the matters of the heart and career. Her current love, cager Rudy Hatfield is very understanding and caring.
"I'm just his second girlfriend, whereas I can't recall anymore kung pang-ilan ko siya," she laughs. "He knows I do sexy scenes but when he was asking me to accompany him to watch my recent solo film, 'Booba,' I refused to go with him because I might be embarrassed when he sees that scene where I appear in my birthday suit. He went by himself and he said he understands it's all part of my job as an actress."
"Booba" is a box-office blockbuster and she's now starring in a new comedy, "Baliktaran, Si Ace at Si Daisy-AC-DC." Her debut album for Viva Records, "Rated R," is also selling very well and she is about launch her new single, "Lupaypay."
On TV, she will be featured in GMA-7's "Rufa Mae sa Larawan: A Special Drama Engagement" as the lead actress in four special episodes starting this Wednesday, April 11, at 9 p.m.
What can Rufa say about former BF Dingdong Avanzado's recent wedding to Jessa Zaragoza? Didn't it cross her mind, while the couple was facing the altar to tie the knot, that she could have been Dingdong's bride?
"Never. I'd never think of marriage now that my career is doing very well. Basta I'm happy. Because of the success of 'Booba,' everywhere I go, people call me Booba. In the first episode of 'Larawan,' we are featuring Booba. This is not a comedy, though, but a drama directed by Joel Lamangan. Mark Gil and Beth Oropesa are my parents. They're both intelligent and accomplished. But me, at 21, I'm still in grade 5 pa rin kaya frustrated sila sa akin. I really enjoyed doing drama for a change. "
The second episode is "Heredera." She plays a dual role. "I'm the missing heiress of Jimmy Santos and I also play my mother. This is a spoof of soap operas about missing heiresses with birthmarks to prove na siya nga ang nawawalang heredera. This is megged by Reuel Bayani.
The third episode is 'Private Tutor,' shot in a beach resort.
The last episode is 'Buhay Kabitenya,' about a family of women who are all mistresses.
She plays her most challenging role so far on the big screen in "Baliktaran."
"I play a lesbian forced by my father, Al Tantay, who also happens to be the film's director, to marry Bayani Agbayani, the son of his best friend, Gabe Mercado," she says. "Bayani naman is a 'bading' (queer). In front of our parents, we're our normal selves. But in the subdivision where we live, we do a role reversal and I'm presented to the community as the husband and Bayani the wife. Both of us have to put on prosthetic make-up for our role. I put on rubberized body suit para magmukhang may muscles ako. It's so hot inside the suit. I also have a moustache. Bayani puts on a wig, fake nails and boobs. It's so funny onscreen but an ordeal for us."
As a sexy comedienne, Rufa Mae is in a league all her own. She might be projecting a beautiful but dumb image on screen, but she is far from one in real life. The truth is she was an honor student in grade and high school.
"But the people have accepted me in this role, so that's just fine with me. After all, because of this, I was able to buy a condo unit for myself and a townhouse for my mother, grandmother, and my siblings. I even bought them their own car. It pays to be dumb din naman pala."
But with success comes all sorts of intrigues. The latest rumor about her which she wants to correct is that she is currently at war with Jolina Magdangal after she left Jolina's show at ABS-CBN, "Arriba, Arriba."
"Jolina and I are not feuding. Talaga namang special participation lang ako sa show. I had to leave it because I got so busy shooting 'Baliktaran,' which already has a playdate. I also have to shoot the music video of 'Lupaypay' for director Yam Laranas. And now I'm also taping for 'Larawan.' Jolina understands na pinag-aaway lang kami ng ibang tao."
