VILLAR-AGUILAR DYNASTY IN LAS PINAS ASSAILED
Las Pinas City, May 7, 2001 - Running priest Fr. Robert Reyes staged a 10-kilometer run in Las Piñas City over the weekend to crusade against political dynasties in the coming elections.
Reyes was joined in his run by GOMBURZA, an anti-traditional politician and political dynasty advocacy group, and the fledgling Las Piñas Against Political Dynasty (LAPAD), which mustered some 1,000 participants in their march through major thoroughfares in Las Piñas last Saturday morning.
Reyes’ run and the accompanying GOMBURZA and LAPAD march stretched from SM Southmall along Alabang-Zapote Road up to the Bamboo Organ Church along Diego Serra street.
In a speech after his run, Reyes warned voters against voting members of a single family into positions of power, saying it breeds unchecked corruption due to the lack of "check and balance".
For his part, LAPAD chairman Felix Sinajon said that sentiment was gaining momentum in Las Piñas against the Aguilar/Villar dynasty.
Sinajon said their grave concern over the possible "total control and power" of the Aguilar family in the city led to the formation of LAPAD.
The dynasty issue has become the main concern in this city after Mrs. Cynthia Aguilar-Villar decided to run for the lone congressional district of Las Piñas that has been vacated by her husband, former Speaker Manny Villar, who is now running for the Senate.
Mrs. Villar’s brother, Las Piñas Mayor Vergel "Nene" Aguilar, is running for reelection while their sister, Elizabeth "Ate Bess" Aguilar-Masangkay is running for the second time as mayor of neighboring Muntinlupa City after losing in her first bid for the post in 1998.
The late family patriarch, Dr. Filemon Aguilar, served as mayor of Las Piñas, for 26 years, and as Las Piñas-Muntinlupa congressman for two terms.
In earlier interviews, Mrs. Villar had dismissed criticisms of her family’s holding top elective posts in the city, saying the Las Piñas voters had the final say on who they want to be their leaders.
