DAYRIT IS NEW SECRETARY OF HEALTH
Malacanang, Feb. 20, 2001 - President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo today appointed Dr. Manuel M. Dayrit as the new Secretary of the Department of Health (DOH) and designated Trade and Industry Secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas II to help "oversee" the work of the Department of Energy until a new DOE Secretary will be appointed.
Dayrit, a physician, medical epidemiologist and medical health care manager by profession, replaced former DOH Secretary Alberto Romualdez.
The President also announced the appointment of Ambassador Howard Dee as presidential assistant for the indigenous people; (Ret. Gen.) Eliseo Rio Jr. as commissioner of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC); Anthony Robert Abad as administrator of the National Food Authority; and Alfonso Cusi as acting general manager of the Philippine Ports Authority.
Prior to his appointment, Dayrit was assistant vice president of the United Laboratories, Inc. and vice president and general manager of the Health Delivery Systems, Inc.
From 1992-1997, Dayrit was Assistant Secretary of the Department of Health. Before that, he served as officer-in-charge of the Bureau of Research and Laboratories of the DOH from 1994-1996.
Among the many positions he held in the DOH were as Director of the Public Information and Health Education Service (1988-92); Program Manager of the Field Epidemiology Training Program (1986-1997); and Head Executive Assistant to the DOH Secretary (1987-1988).
During the press conference at Malacanang this afternoon, the President said that since short-term issues related to energy policy are closely related to consumer welfare, she had asked DTI Secretary Roxas to help oversee the work of the DOE "until we find somebody who is both technically and legally qualified as DOE secretary."
