RP GAYS, LESBIANS MARCH FOR EQUAL RIGHTS
Manila, June 17, 2000 - The theme "Fight Discrimination Now," Filipino lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans-genders (LGBT) took to the streets of Manila’s Tourist Belt today to demonstrate their solidary, diversity, courage and pride.
Task Force Pride (TFP), the group of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBTs) organizing the annual Pride March, said the event aims to teach society to recognize and respect the diverse expression of responsible sexuality, most especially the right of LGBTs to a dignified life without discrimination, and prejudice.
The yearly Pride March seeks to raise public awareness on the issues and concerns faced by LGBTs such as religious persecution, discrimination in the work place, family rejection and negative media stereotyping, among others. It also provides LGBTs the space and opportunity to celebrate their existence and to continue building community solidarity.
The parade started at the Remedios Circle, went around Mabini and M.H. Del Pilar and wound up at the Remedios Circle.
Other activities scheduled for the month are the holding of Lesbianarama, a Lesbian Arts Festival from June 28 to July 12 at the Surrounded by Water Gallery located at EDSA cor. Ortigas, beside the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration Building, the launching of the signature campaign for Senate Bill 1863 entitled “An Act Prohibiting Discrimination on the Basis of Sexual Orientation,” filed by Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago last January 12, its counterpart bill in the House, House Bill 9095 filed by Rep. Etta Rosales.
Task Force Pride will announce later details of the LGBT community party to be held on July 1.
