CEBU EXPORTS RISE 14%
Cebu City, May 28, 2000 - Exports in Central Visayas are on the rise. Regional Director Aster Caberte of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) released figures that show the Central Visayas exports in 1999 was US$2.407 billion, or 14 percent higher than the total in 1998.
In a report, Caberte said electronics consistently ranked number one in the past three years, contributing 29% of total exports in 1999.
Furniture ranked second with 8%, followed by other industrial goods at 7%.
These three sectors have consistently been in the top five export sectors in the last three years.
"It is good to know that the region is not solely focused on electronics and that regional exports have diversified to other industries," Caberte said.
The other sectors in the top ten are: electrical equipment with a 6% share; garments/wearable, 6%; steel/metal products, three percent; vehicles/machinery parts, 3%; marine products, 2%; gifts, toys and houseware, 1%; and fashion accessories, 1%.
