DOLPHY AND SON TO PLAY WWII COMFORT GAYS
Quezon City, March 15, 2000 - The King of Comedy in Philippine movies and TV, Dolphy, has finally found a dramatic role perfect for his age and talent: a transvestite stage dancer/singer who performed before Japanese occupation forces during World War II.
It is based on a true story made public only recently when a “Comfort Gay” narrated his ordeal to newspaper reporters. The tag “Comfort Gay” comes from the term “Comfort Women” used to describe the Asian women used as sex slaves by invading Japanese soldiers and offices during WWII.
Dolphy is reportedly serious about his plan to shoot the movie tentatively titled “Comfort Gay” and play the title role as the 70-year-old narrator, one of six gays who performed as a group during the war. They wore women’s clothing, jewelry and make-up and looked like beautiful Filipinas on stage.
Japanese soldiers courted them, and turned them into sex slaves for the duration of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Their ordeal only ended when the Philippines was liberated at the end of WWII.
According to newspaper reports, five of the gay performers are still alive.
Malaya’s entertainment columnist Ethel Ramos writes that Dolphy’s own outfit, RVQ Productions, will produce the movie, to be directed by Gil Portes with a script by Clodualdo del Mundo Jr.
The young Dolphy will be played by the comedian’s own son Eric Quizon.
Dolphy is so enthusiastic about the movie that he wants it entered in the 2000 Metro Manila Film Festival.
