QC POLITICS: DABOY FOR MAYOR, SHARON’S HUSBAND FOR VICE
Quezon City, March 3, 2000 - The ruling political party LAMP may field a very show business-oriented ticket in for top Quezon City local positions in the 2001 elections.
LAMP campaign manager, Senator Vicente Sotto, disclosed to Senate reporters the party is seriously considering popular action star Rudy Fernandez and lawyer Francis Pangilinan, husband of megastar Sharon Cuneta, as its mayoralty and vice mayoralty bets in Quezon City in the 2001 elections.
“Their strong mass appeal could easily win them votes, and give their opponents a tough fight,” said Sotto.
Sotto said Fernandez, who is married to equally-famous award-winning actress Lorna Tolentino, had already manifested his intention to lead the ruling party’s ticket in Quezon City. He will take his oath under the ruling party anytime.
However, Sotto confirmed that Pangilinan is still undecided on which position to run for. He is reportedly planning to give the Quezon City congressional race another try, after being defeated in the last polls. He was a councilor before he tried his luck for the House of Representatives.
According to Sotto, Pangilinan, the husband of the local movielandia’s megastar is LAMP’s first choice for vice mayor.
“So we are waiting for his response but the party did not give him a deadline on making a decision,” said Sotto.
Sharon Cuneta has been very candid about her all-out support for her husband in case he seeks an elective position.
“It would not be difficult for him to stage a comeback. Remember, he was a councilor. And admittedly, he has Sharon to back up his campaign,” remarked Sotto.
