CREATION OF NEW MINDORO PROVINCES OPPOSED

Calapan, Mindoro Oriental, March 12, 2000 There is a strong and growing opposition to the proposal of creating two new provinces by partitioning Mindoro Oriental into Mindoro del Norte and Mindoro del Sur.

Reacting to a provincial board resolution on the matter, Provincial Legal Officer Dante Manzo and Mindoro Oriental Governor Rodolfo Valencia said they are planning to file charges against opposition board members for misrepresentation in the issue of the partition of the province.

Town mayors of Oriental Mindoro earlier rejected the proposal by Representatives Renato Leviste and Manuel Andaya to take the eight towns of the first district and place them within the boundaries of the new provinces Mindoro del Norte and Mindoro del Sur.

Governor Valencia claims the partition will not be beneficial to the people of Oriental Mindoro but is a political maneuver profitable only to manipulative politicians in the opposition.
