OLIVIA LAMASAN TACKLES ADULTERY IN SHARON FLICK
Quezon City, Feb. 23, 2000 - Filmmaker Olivia Lamasan has always strived for excellence, investing her best in every directorial project that comes her way. Her dramatic outings never go unnoticed, delighting the most cynical of the critics and moving the most affected of moviegoers.
“I feel that when I do a film, which I only do once a year, I owe it to my producer, my actors, the staff, and the crew to give the best. And if we all share the same vision of coming with something beautiful, then I owe it to them to give them that,” said director Lamasan.
The director rates her films equally; none is better than the other, fulfillment wise.
“My benchmark film, you ask? Hindi ko masagot. Fulfillment-wise, everything that I do. Kaya nga siguro hirap silang makatrabaho ako kasi talagang more than 200 percent, more than a 100 percent ang ibinibigay ko. I kill myself for every film that I make,” she added.
“Maalaala Mo Kaya” (her first directorial job), “Sana Maulit Muli,” “Hanggang Kailan Kita Mamahalin,” and “Madrasta” concretely demonstrate her diligence at work. Her latest masterwork, Star Cinema’s “Minsan, Minahal Kita” is no exception.
But of course the movie-going public would like to think “Minsan, Minahal Kita” sets the standard for all Olivia Lamasan films. After all, it’s the reunion movie of Richard Gomez and Sharon Cuneta, one of the most bankable, most exciting love teams hereabouts.
After “Madrasta,” Sharon’s first movie with director Lamasan, the latter decided that the actress was ready for a mature role. She wanted Sharon to play a mistress, but with a difference.
The serious subject of adultery is lent a light treatment in “Minsan, Minahal Kita.” Although underneath it director Lamasan makes it a point to show the consequences of adultery.
True to Lamasan’s style, the movie does not take a stand on adultery.
She elaborated: “I’m in no position to make a judgment, nor is the film. My stand is… these things happen. Women who are married fall in love, men who are married fall in love. But there are reasons why they do things that they do. In the end you decide. Ikaw, saan ka?”
