MIRIAM QUIAMBAO INVADES TV, THEATER
Manila, Jan. 18, 2000 - Miss Universe ‘99 first runner-up Miriam Quiambao has yet to follow the route taken by former beauty queen Gloria Diaz and Evangeline Pascual, who both became movie actresses after their reign.
Miriam is now highly visible as a morning talk show host, with her own segment on GMA-7’s Unang Hirit. And her latest career decision takes her even closer to the silver screen, via the legitimate stage.
Her stage debut is this weekend, in the religious-social drama Akusado (Trial of the Century) which will run at the CCP Little Theater with 8 p.m. shows on Friday and Saturday, with repeats at the GSIS Theater on Roxas Boulevard on Feb. 25 and 26.
In Akusado, a group of individuals files a class suit against God, accusing Him of the sufferings they are going through.
“It’s something new, something that truly excites me,” says Miriam, who is an active member of the Ligaya ng Panginoon Community, the play’s producers.
Miriam says she is determined to make her debut performance memorable, although she likes to make it clear that they “are a group of non-professional actors, mostly first-timers, with a common goal of bringing God closer through this endeavor.”
She admits that the play aims to evangelize and make people think about their faith and rethink their convictions.
Compared to TV hosting, stage acting is both demanding and stressful, she says.
“The discipline required is different. No take two’s, everything is spontaneous, just like the finals night of a beauty pageant. There’s no room for mistakes.”
Akusado is under the direction of stage thespian Jaime del Mundo from an original script by journalist Ricky Gallardo, who derived his inspiration from C.S. Lewis’ God on the Dock.
Proceeds from the play will go the different mission work supported by the Ligaya ng Panginoon community. Tickets for this weekend are available at the CCP Box Office.
