APRIL BOY, NEW JUKEBOX KING, STARS IN FIRST MOVIE
Quezon City, Jan. 4, 2000- April ''Boy'' Regino, the new singing idol of the masses, makes his major film debut in the musical comedy ''Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin,'' the first venture World Arts Cinema.
The mass appeal and magnetism of April Boy Regino inspired the producers of World Arts Cinema to assign him the lead role in “Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin.”
Director Wilfredo Milan, who wrote and directed Tanggapin, realized that April Boy is a big, big star. “Wherever we shot, from the slums of Mandaluyong to places of the middle class, the presence of April Boy always guaranteed a big crowd. Para siyang si Nora Aunor kapag nagsusyuting.”
When the offer came, the new Jukebox King was hesitant to accept, and only direk Milan convinced the shy singer by making him an offer he could not refuse. April Boy was offered a chance to star in a movie based on one of his many hit songs, portraying a character close to his real self. The song turned out to be “Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin.”
Milan thought the song had an almost universal appeal. Adults and even children were singing the song from Aparri to Jolo. April Boy himself believed it was the most cinematic among his many hits.
“Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin” casts April Boy as a squatter boy who finds love and social acceptance from a rich girl, played by Ciara Sotto. The movie also stars bantamweight champion Manny Pacquiao, Manilyn Reynes, Lindsay Custodio, Precious Valencia, Marissa Sanchez, Mikey Arroyo, Paolo Robles, Gabriel Romulo.
“Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin” opens in Metro Manila theaters on Jan. 12.
