SANDRA GOMEZ: 1st RP INTERNATIONAL MOVIE STAR OF NEW MILLENNIUM
Subic Freeport, Jan. 2, 2000- Sandra Gomez, known to TV audiences as Lumen in a detergent commercial, is the country’s first international film star for the new millennium.
Sandra auditioned for, and won the co-starring part in “Doomsdayer” which stars Silvestre Stallone's ex-wife, former model Brigitte Neilsen.
The movie started shooting last Nov. 30 at the Subic Bay Freeport. Producer is Michael Sellers who is head of ABS-CBN Entertainment.
“Doomsdayer,” an action-adventure ovie, is the third offering of ABS-CBN Entertainment, the first two being “Goodbye America” and “Legacy,” also produced by Sellers.
“Goodbye America,” also filmed in Subic, starred James Brolin (Barbra Streisand’s husband) along with Alma Concepcion, Nanette Medved and Angel Aquino. “Legacy,” on the other hand, was topbilled by David Hasselholf and Donita Rose, before she became Singapore’s MTV star.
“Doomsdayer,” megged by Michael John Sarna from a screenplay by Bob Couttie, stars Joe Lara as Jack Logan, an agent for a secret international organization tasked with recovering weapons for mass destruction. In the movie, Sandra plays the role of a former assassin named Dyna Castenada.
20-year-old Sandra Gomez is also known for her roles in “Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako” and “Marinella,” and in her movie outings like “Kawal Dugo,” “Anino,” “Techno Warriors” and “Guevarra.”
Aside from being an actress and commercial model, Sandra is also a martial arts expert. Her twin blackbelts in taekwondo and aikikai, as well as her expertise with arnis, get showcased in the action-packed movie which will be shown in several countries.
On her first day of shooting, Sandra did grueling hours of action scenes in the depths of Subic’s rainforest, dodging enemy soldiers and firing a bazooka. She also got to kiss her co-star, John Lara.
It’s been great so far,” said Sandra. “I never expected to costar in my first international movie; I feel very honored. I’m also happy that it’s being made entirely in the Philippines; it’ll be good for our film industry.”
The star of the movie, Joe Lara, was impressed by her. “ She’s certainly got everything it takes to break out into international movies. She’s a good actress, she moves well and she looks good. I think a lot of people are going to notice here.”
Sandra auditioned for the role, along with some of the best known names in Philippine cinema.
“Doomsdayer” producer Michael Sellers said: “At first we thought she might be too young for the part. She’s playing a very powerful character with a lot of dramatic depth and she’ll be up against veterans like Udo Kier from ‘End of Days’ and Brigitte Nielsen from ‘Beverly Hills Cop,’ so it’s very a very demanding role.”
Both Sellers and Sarna were impressed with Sandra during the audition. They said “We saw a lot of excellent actresses but somehow Sandra stood out and showed she was what we were looking for.”
“Doomsdayer” is set in New York, Mexico, London and the South Pacific.
