SUNDAY, MONDAY QUAKES IN MINDANAO
Quezon City, Jan. 4, 2000- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 rocked Surigao del Sur yesterday but no damage was reported.
According to Erlinton Olavare of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the tremor, which occurred at 10:38 a.m., was of tectonic origin.
Its center was located off the coast 61 kilometers northeast of Tandag, Surigao del Sur.
The tremblor was caused by the movement of the Philippine Trench. No aftershocks are expected.
The quake was felt at Intensity 2 in Surigao City and Intensity 1 in Bislig, Surigao del Sur.
Another quake hit Gen. Santos City last Sunday at 8:47 p.m.
Philvolcs measured the tremor with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Ritcher scale. Its center was traced southwest of Gen Santos City. It was felt at Intensity 2 in Gen. Santos City and Intensity 1 in Kidapawan.
