MANILA IS 1999 MBA CHAMPION
Manila, Dec. 9, 1999- The Manila Metrostars routed the Cebu Gems, 101-83, to crown themselves the 1999 MBA national champions before a big hometown cheering crowd at the Mail & More-San Andres Sports Complex.
Romel Adducul, Gilbert Demape, Don Camaso, Alex Compton and Augustus Brown came up with one big basket after another in a decisive Manila fourth-quarter splurge, and the Metrostars broke loose from a tight see-sawing contest as they eventually delivered the killer blow on the Gems in their title showdown.
The Metrostars, the elimination-round topnotcher and the Northern Conference champions, went on to win the national crown as they beat the Gems, 4-2, in the best-of-seven playoff.
Manila won the first two games at home before snatching one in Cebu in Game Five for the decisive 3-2 lead.
The Manila crowd started to celebrate with still 30 seconds left in the clock, barging into the playing court as Manila coach Louie Alas, his son riding his shoulder, approached Cebu coach Tonichi Yturri for a handshake.
"Kung meron mang susi sa series na ito, it's my players mental toughness. I have to give it to them dahil sa laki ng puso ng ipinakita nila all tournament-long," said Alas.
