IT'S A GIRL FOR DONNA AND
(from the Philippine Star by Ricky Lo)
Quezon City, Sept. 10, 1999 - She's due to deliver her and husband Yong Larrazabal's first baby on Oct. 22 yet (or even two weeks earlier) but Donna Cruz already knows that it's going to be a girl, according to the ultrasound done on her last week in Cebu (where she and Yong are based) by her attending physician (O.B. Gynecologist), Dr. Raida Varona.
"Yong and I are calling her Isabella Adriana," said Donna during a brief long-distance phone interview with Funfare. "Belle for short. Belle is the name of the `beauty' in Beauty and the Beast which happens to be my favorite. My doctor told me that the baby is so cute. Ang tangos daw ng nose!"
Donna hopes to deliver Belle by the Lamaze Method, with Yong assisting her.
"Ayoko sanang makita ni Yong 'yung paglabas ng baby," laughed Donna, "but I don't have a choice. He'll be right beside me every step of the way."
Between now and Belle's baptism a month after her birth, Donna has to be very careful with herself because of her delicate pregnancy, threatened early on by "spotting" that prompted her doctor to advise Donna to avoid exerting great physical effort.
"I have to stay home most of the time, especially since my delivery is fast due," added Donna. "Dahan-dahan ako in all my movements."
Throughout her pregnancy, Donna has been making Belle listen to classical music, mostly Mozart music, advised as she has been by people in the know that soft music is good for the baby inside the womb. Donna even bought on-line Baby Mozart tapes from the US.
"I won't be a surprised if Belle will be singing as soon as she comes out," laughed Donna. "I'm sure magiging singer din siya."
So virtually immobile is Donna that on Sept. 19, her and Yong's first wedding anniversary, they haven't made plans for any celebration, opting to just pass the day with a quiet (candle-lit, maybe?) dinner at home. More romantic, isn't it?
Belle will stay not in a nursery of her own but with her parents in their own room, the better for the first-time Mama Donna to attend to her hands-on.
"I will breastfeed Belle for maybe one year," said Donna. "You know naman that mother's milk is far better than any canned milk."
Now 155 lbs. heavy, Donna plans to slim down to her appropriate weight (around 110 pounds) for her 5'4" frame not so much by working-out as by dieting.
"But I don't want to go on a strict diet because a few years ago, I did that and I almost suffered from anorexia," recalled Donna. "I was then weighing only 89 pounds and I was warned by my doctor that if I didn't watch out, baka maging anorexic na ako."
The baby, as the title of her latest album puts it, is "hulog ng langit" for Donna and Yong who tied the knot last year after a whirlwind courtship that started with a blind date (during which Yong, who just came from the States at that time, didn't know that Donna is a singer-actress).
"The other day," said Donna, "I suffered premature contraction so I had to be rushed to the hospital. It has really been a difficult pregnancy for me, kaya memorable si Belle paglabas niya."
Even if she'll be a stay-home mom, Donna promises to help promote Viva Records' Hulog ng Langit (the carrier single which was composed by Vhenee Saturno). Donna plans to go on provincial tour like what Sharon Cuneta (for her When I Love album) has just done.
"I can accept singing engagements and TV guestings," assured Donna, "okey lang kay Yong. But I don't think I can do movies because that would take me away from home for long periods of time."
