RP SWEEPS SOUTHEAST ASIA BASKETBALL TITLE
Manila, July 8, 1999 - The Philippines defeated Singapore, 74-66, last night to rule the 1999 SEABA President Joseph Estrada Cup Basketball Championship at the Ninoy Aquino (formerly Rizal Memorial) Stadium.
Ernesto Billones scored 14 points, including a three-pointer that sparked an 11-3 run to give the Nationals a 68-57 advantage with 5:42 remaining in the game, after the Singaporeans had threatened at 54-57, with 8:20 to go.
Lenvy Aglate, who had 16 points, scored six straight points for a 63-70 count, going into the final two minutes.
Romel Adducul, who finished with 20 points, and Billones had a basket each as the Philippines erected an 11-point lead before Ng Wee Kimar fired a triple for the final tally.
"We were able to check the two Americans and Mao Hai Bin dahil sa parang sila ang barometer para ma-execute ang running game namin," said head coach Louie Alas. "Magandang send-off itong panalo namin para sa Brunei SEA Games. Pero marami rin akong nakitang lapses namin, lalo na sa opensa."
Renato Morano had 14 points, while Bernard Williams, a naturalized player, finished with 21 points.
In an earlier game, Indonesia defeated Malaysia, 80-65, to finish third in the tournament organized by the Basketball Association of the Philippines and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Olympic Committee, and commercial sponsors YKL-Fuji Film, Adidas, Baker's Fair, and Foodmart Inc., La Suerte Cigar and Cigarette Factory and Molten ball.
