LORNA PREFERS BOX OFFICE
SUCCESS TO AWARDS
Manila, June 22, 1999 - Lorna Tolentino is being rumored as a sure best actress winner in the Manila Film Festival for her challenging role in "Luksong Tinik" but her wish for the movie is to emerge as the top grosser in the box office.
"They say that a dramatic movie like this seldom becomes a box office success, but in 1996, my movie "Bayarang Puso" with Aga Muhlach that was also directed by Joey Reyes, became the top grosser," she proudly proclaims. "But of course if it becomes a top grosser and at the same time wins awards, it will make Mother Lily (Monteverde) very happy ."
She thanks Joey Reyes for giving her a free hand in interpreting the role of Beth Pineda, the murder witness in "Luksong Tinik."
"I experimented with my body movements, and changed the way I walk. I imitated a friend whose shoulder shakes when she walks. I even changed my voice, made it more high pitched," Lorna narrates.
But the only thing which she did not change is what looks so unlike Lorna: her unkempt, dry hair.
"In the movie, my hair goes in every which direction. Sad to say, but that's the way my hair really looks when I let it dry naturally. This is one movie when I did not need the services of Tita Fanny (Serrano) to make me pretty on screen, " she said.
And for the first time, a bunch of obscenities flowed out of her mouth, from 'leche' and 'punyeta' to 'hindot' and 'tangina.'
Lorna admits that since 1982, when she played a drug addict in "Moral," her role in "Luksong Tinik" is the most offbeat. She plays a swindler and courier a drug syndicate. The role is both physically and emotionally draining.
After Luksong Tinik, she will be seen as the mother of a 14-year old juvenile drug addict in "Adok." The film is almost true-to-life, about the agony of parents trying to reform a drug addict son.
In real life, Lorna is the stepmother of Mark Anthony Fernandez, son of husband Rudy Fernandez and actress Alma Moreno. Mark is currently undergoing rehab in a facility, where he has been confined since last year.
After Adok, she wants to play an anti-heroine in a movie with Ara Mina, again to be directed by Joey Reyes.
