NATIONAL BASKETBALL TEAM
TRYOUTS MOVED TO FEB. 7
Manila, Feb. 2, 1999 - Coach Louie Alas gave in yesterday to numerous requests for postponement of the tryouts to select the members of the national basketball team, and announced the new date: Feb. 7.
''Many have called me up and requested for the postponement. They really want to be a part of the team,'' Alas said.
In order to entice tall players into the team, Alas invited 6-foot-7 Earl Alvarado Jr., the top PBA draftee, 6-foot-6 Danny Seigle, 6-foot-6 Eric Menk and 6-foot-3 Jonathan Ordonio to the 10-day tryouts to be held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Other PBA players invited by Alas were 6-foot-10 Fil-Tongan Paul Asi Taulava, 6-foot-6 Mark Clemence Telan, 6-foot-6 Christopher Cantonjos and 6-foot-5 Danny Ildefonso.
The PBA had earlier said that these players wouldn't be allowed to join the tryouts because ''they are over 23 years old.'' But the Basketball Association of the Philippines remains hopeful that the PBA would honor its verbal commitment last year that rookies and sophomores would be made available to national teams.
The Philippine national teams will play in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association championship set in Manila in July, the Asian Basketball Confederation championship from Aug. 28-Sept. 5 in Fukouka, Japan, and the Brunei Southeast Asian Games in September.
The Metropolitan Basketball Association had earlier committed its players to the national team.
From the ranks of the MBA, Alas has invited to the >tryouts: the 6-foot-4 John Ferriols, who was the league's inaugural MVP while playing for the Negros Slashers, the 6-foot-6 Rommel Adducul (Manila), 6-footer Christian Calaguio (San Juan), 6-foot-flat Ato Morano (Pampanga), 6-foot-2 Gherome Ejercito (San Juan), 6-foot-2 Dondon Hontiveros (Cebu), 6-foot-3 Eddie Laure (Batangas), 5-foot-11 Willie Miller (Nueva Ecija), 6-foo-flat Gilbert Demape (Manila), 6-foot-1 Biboy Simon (Laguna) and 5-foot-11 Wynne Arboleda (Laguna).
From the collegiate-level, the candidates are 6-foot-5 >Don Carlos Allado and 6-foot-1 Florendo Ritualo Jr., both of La Salle, 6-foot-6 Kerby Raymundo of NCAA champion Letran, and 6-foot-5 Homer Se of San Sebastian College.
