Manila, Dec. 29, 1998 - Ever Bilena flirted with disaster before escaping with a nail-biting 52-51 win over Chowking yesterday to clinch the First Birch Tree Women's PBL crown at the Makati Coliseum.
National team mainstay Julie Amos drilled in a crucial trey in the dying seconds as Ever Bilena swept the best-of-three title series. Ever Bilena took the opener, also via a 44-43 cliffhanger last Saturday.
"Sinabi ko lang sa kanila na maglaro ng higit pa sa pinakita nila sa Game One. Maganda naman ang nilaro nila lalo na si Julie (Amos)," said Ever Bilena coach Mike Orquillas.
Chowking actually had the chance to snatch the victory and force a winner-take-all match but a travelling violation on Daisy Torres with 1.9 seconds doomed the team.
Amos led the way for the Beauty Enhancers with 17 points and went on to bag the MVP plum while Carolina Mindo tossed in 12.
In the Yakult PBL Centennial Cup semifinals, Tanduay stretched its winning run with a 102-75 rout of Chowking.
Meanwhile, Willie Miller, one of five players Tanduay is expected to elevate as pros when it joins the Philippine Basketball Association next season, denied reports that he has agreed to play for Nueva Ecija in the Metropolitan Basketball Association.
