President Estrada led Filipinos in congratulating World Boxing Council
featherweight champion Luisito Espinosa who kept his crown by knocking
out challenger Kennedy McKinney of the United States at 47 seconds of the
second round in Indio, California.
Espinosa, the second ranked featherweight in the world after Naseem Hamed of England, knocked McKinney, a gold medallist in the 1988 Olympics, down in the first round.
The WBC champion continued his attack in the second round, knocking McKinney down again before the referee stepped in with more than two minutes left in the round.
Espinosa's record improved to 43 wins and seven losses, with 23 knockouts.
President Estrada congratulated yesterday Filipino World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight champion Luisito Espinosa for his second round knockout win over American challenger Kennedy McKinney.
"I join the Filipino nation in congratulating you for your impressive victory," said the President, an avid boxing fan. "You have made every Filipino proud to be one today."
The President said Espinosa's feat once again affirmed the Filipinos' status as world-class athletes.
He added, "I look forward to cheering for you in your future boxing matches."
