Manila, Nov. 28, 1998 - San Miguel Beer checked a three-game
skid and forced a sudden-death in its best-of-three series for third place
with Purefoods in the PBA Governors Cup with an emphatic 101-90 win last
night at the Araneta Coliseum.
Bob McCann scattered a conference-high 50 points but San Miguel put this to naught as the Beermen came out storming from the start on the way to a big comeback from an 88-94 loss in Game One Tuesday.
The deciding third game will be played at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Astrodome.
Ushering in Game Three of the best-of-seven finals tomorrow will be the PBA Annual Awards where Kenneth Duremdes looks a cinch to win the Most Valuable Player plum.
Bagging Conference awards in between the two games last night were Jerry Codiñera (Best Player) and Silas Mills (Best Import). Both won in runaway fashions.
Codiñera took his second BPC plum as he accumulated 2,945 points to Danny Ildefonso's 751 and Benjie Paras' 688. Mills emerged the Best Import as he amassed 1,658 points to Lamont Strothers' 541 and John Best's 429.
But it wasn't really a good night for Codiñera as Purefoods missed a shot at clinching third place in the tournament with assistant coach Louie Alas calling the shots in place of head coach Chito Narvasa, who attended the retirement rites of his Supreme Court chief justice father Andres, Sr.
Lamont Strothers dished out a near triple-double with 32 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds for SMB.
Larry Robinson backed him up with 24 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
