FERNANDEZ TOPS $10,000 ITF-PHIL SATELLITE CIRCUIT

Manila, Nov. 23, 1998 - Maricris Fernandez played a nearly perfect game to beat her South African opponent, 6-2, 6-0, to capture the $10,000 Union Cement-Asianbank Mastercard ITF- Philippine Women's Satellite Circuit Week 1 at the Rizal Tennis Center.

It was the third title in the same tournament for Maricris, who won it twice in 1996.

The fifth-seeded Fernandez made only 3 service faults throughout the 58-minute-long contest against Lara Von Rooyen.

She was coached by former national team member Johnny Jose, who was also her coach in the Australian Open.

Fernandez has emerged as the only member of the tennis national women's team going to the Asian Games. Her three other teammates are still in the United States, and their school schedules are in conflict with the schedule of the Asian Games.
