PINOY BOXING TEAM 3rd IN FINLAND
Tampere, Finland, Oct. 21, 1998 - Filipino boxers beat two American opponents at the close of the 20th Tammer Cup International Boxing Championships to push the Team Caltex Philippines to 3rd place in the overall ranking against 10 other national teams.
Efren Desierto beat American Jose Navarro in the light flyweight division, 13-1, while lightweight Ramil Zambales won in an 8-6 decision over Nahlon Kenwick to claim the gold medals in their divisions.
The twin victories at the Pynikki Sports Hall came as a consolation for the Filipinos, who saw three other bets suffer contrasting losses that ruined the team's chance to cop the team championships.
Welterweight Romeo Brin, fly Randy Paspie and featherweight Elmer Pamisa settled for silver medals. Brin lost to Finland's Amin Asikalnen, 10-4, while an upset stomach derailed Pamisa's bid against Norway's Reider Walstad, 8-1.
The seven-man RP squad sent by Caltex Philippines and supported by Pacific Concrete and Asphalt Mix, the Philippine Sports Commission and Adidas Philippines, harvested a total of six medals including the bronze by bantam Virgilio Vicera to emerge as one of the highest winning percentage.
Finland won the overall title with 3 golds, 3 silvers, and 5 bronzes while the nine-man US team won 3 golds, 3 silvers and 2 bronzes.
