RP BOXERS BAG 2 GOLDS IN TAMMER CUP
Tampere, Finland, Oct. 20, 1998-- Light flyweight Efren Desierto and lightweight Ramil Zambales defeated their American opponents, giving Team Caltex Philippines two golds at the close of the 20th Tammer Cup International Boxing Championships.
Desierto battered Jose Navarro for an easy 13-1 victory while Zambales survived Mahlon Kerwick, 8-6. The Philippine team made another impressive stint but missed the overall championship in the tough European contest.
The United States and Finland each won three titles while Romania, Norway, Sweden and Tunisia one each in the tournament, counting toward the international amateur rankings.
Aside from two golds, the Philippines also grabbed three silvers through flyweight Randy Paspie, welterweight Romeo Brin and featherweight Elmer Pamisa.
In the semis, the Philippine team cornered five of the 24 finals seats for a chance at second straight overall championship in the tournament.
