MBA FINALS: NEGROS OVER DAGUPAN IN OVERTIME
Bacolod City, Oct. 18, 1998 - The Negros Slashers cut down the Pampanga Dragons, 95-94, in the first game of the Metropolitan Basketball Association's national finals at the University of St. La Salle gym.
Johnedel Cardel scored with five seconds left in overtime, completing the Slashers' difficult climb from 12 points down in the final quarter. The hometown crowd, currently celebrating the Masskara festival, was driven into a frenzy.
''The Dragons are really strong. It's a good thing that we were able to keep up with them in the final quarter,'' said Negros coach Jun Noel. ''I give it to the boys. They played with a lot of determination and big heart.''
Game Two of the best-of-seven series will be held at the same venue today. After a two-day rest, the MBA finals will move to Pampanga for Games 3, 4 and 5 starting Wednesday.
