SUPPORT SOUGHT TO HOST WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP
Manila, Oct. 14, 1998 - Financial assistance from the government and private sectors is desperately needed to enable the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) to host the prestigious 10th World Boxing Championships next year, which might otherwise be held in other countries with the financial capability to stage it.
ABAP president Manny Lopez said that the P30 million needed to stage the championships is too much for the ABAP and its main sponsor, Caltex, to shoulder on their own. Caltex is willing to extend some support for the staging of the World meet, but it would not be enough and additional support is still very much needed.
"Marami na kaming nilapitan for support pero up to now wala pang response, Caltex is willing to support us but that will not be enough. Ito namang project na ito ay para sa buong bayan ang karangalan, hindi lang sa ABAP, kaya sana may makuha pa kaming tulong," said Lopez, who also bared that two other countries have expressed interest in taking over the hosting of the meet.
International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) secretary general Karl Wehr told ABAP that Australia and Uzbekistan signified their intention to host the slugfest.
