RP KEEPS SOUTHEAST ASIA CAGE TITLE
Suphanburi City, Thailand, October 11, 1998 - The Philippines demolished Malaysia, 74-54, in the finals of the South East Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) tournament to retain the title.
It was touch-and-go in the first half, but the Filipino dribblers recovered and wiped out their opponents in the second half.
Kerby Raymundo of Letran delivered a shining performance, with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Santo Tomas duo of Emmerson Oreta and Zyrus Baguio delivered a combined total of 28 points, and San Sebastian's Christian Coronel and team skipper John Mesina tallied 11 and nine points, respectively.
The RP team had earlier trashed Malaysia, 77-63, in the opening game of the tournament which saw 23 turnovers.
The Nationals, coached by Louie Alas of the newly crowned NCAA champion Letran Knights, will represent SEABA in the 15th ABC championship for junior men next month in Calcutta.
