BASEBALL'S 100TH YEAR IN RP MARKED
Cavite City, Oct. 10, 1998 - A weekend of fun games, exhibition matches and a big gathering of sports leaders will be held at the Montano Stadium in Cavite City on Oct. 17 and 18 to mark the 100th year of baseball-softball in the Philippines.
By some historical accounts, the sport was first played in Cavite by US Marines immediately after the Battle of Manila Bay, when the American Navy defeated the Spanish armada.
The celebrations next weekend are organized by the Amateur Slo-pitch Softball Association of the Philippines. It will commemorate the successes the Philippines has had in the past and informs the public of the current programs promoting all forms of baseball and softball in the country.
Among the invited guests to the commemoration are top officials of the Philippine Sports Association, the Philippine Olympic Committee, Little League, TOT baseball and softball association presidents.
Family games will be played all day, with baseball equipment as prizes.
Coaching clinics will be held on Oct. 18 at the Montano Stadium, following day-long exhibition matches the day before.
