SIARGAO NOW PART OF AUSSIE SURFING CIRCUIT
Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, Oct. 3, 1998 - The Philippines is now officially on the international surfers' map. The Siargao Cup, to be held this year from October 5 to 11, has been listed as part of the Australian Championship Circuit, the biggest surfing series outside the United States.
The Philippines' newfound popularity as a world-class surfing destination will be tested by no less than the No. 1 ranked surfer in the world, Danny Wills, who is already in Siargao riding the famous Cloud Nine surf break.
The 22-year-old Australian is on a break from the 11-led World Championship Tour where he holds the lead.
"Siargao is very popular among surfers from all over since a lot of nice stuff has been written about it. The photos and stories are just awesome," Wills remarked. "We're here to sample the thrills for ourselves."
The Siargao Cup is the biggest local surfing event locally. It will be the first to be rated and supervised by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), the international governing body of pro surfing.
Top-ranked surfers from Australia, Japan, Guam and the United States will vie for honors and the $5,000 prize pot. The Philippines will be represented by surfers from Surigao del Norte, La Union, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes and Aurora Province.
