ACTOR ANTHONY ALONZO SUCCUMBS
TO CANCER
Quezon City, Oct. 11, 1998
- FAMAS Best Actor awardee and two-time Quezon City Councilor Anthony Alonzo
died last Friday, succumbing to skin cancer. He was 50.
Anthony's sister, character actress Alicia Alonzo, said the cancer originated from a mole on his back which he had removed without knowing it was cancerous. The actor was first confined at the Capitol Medical Center last August, and appeared to be recovering when discharged. He had a relapse in September, and stayed at St. Luke's Medical Center for more than a month, becoming comatose a few days before he died.
Alonzo, who stayed single, was a two-time Councilor of the 2nd District of Quezon City (1992-1998). In the last elections, he ran for congressman but lost to re-electionist Rep. Dante Liban.
Alonzo won his Best Actor trophy from FAMAS for his performance in the movie "Hindi Sa 'Yo ang Mundo Baby Porcuna" in 1982. He was again nominated for Best Actor the following year, by the Metro Manila Film Festival, for his role in the movie "Bago Kumalat ang Kamandag."
