TYPHOON 'BABS' CUTS OFF POWER, GROUNDS FERRIES
Manila, Oct. 21, 1998 - Five major islands in the Visayas region have started feeling the effects of typhoon Loleng (international code name Babs), as they go through their second day without electricity following the typhoon's damage to the power grid in Leyte.
The National Power Corporation announced that the islands of Leyte, Panay, Negros, Samar and Bohol have been without power since yesterday afternoon.
Food distribution in the Bicol, Visayas and Northern Mindanao areas have been disrupted as ferries remain grounded waiting for the storm to pass.
Ferries affected include the service between Virac, Catanduanes and Tabaco, Albay. Likewise grounded are all the boats plying the Sorsogon-Samar route.
Thousands of passengers and hundreds of tons of commercial cargo, including food and medical supplies, remain stranded at the ferry terminals in Allen and Matnog.
