NEW TYPHOON THREATENS CENTRAL PHILIPPINES
Manila, Oct. 16, 1998 - The Philippine weather bureau today issued a warning to residents of eastern portions of the major island of Luzon as well as the Central Visayas Region to prepare for a new typhoon approaching the country.
The low pressure area was first spotted near Guam and had grown into tropical depression, now named Loling.
The Office of Civil Defense in Western Visayas has advised barangay coordinating councils to be ready.
National government agencies as well as the Red Cross are keeping a close watch on the path of typhoon Loling, which is expected to either cross the Leyte-Cebu-Negros-Panay area or veer further north to Bicol and the Southern Tagalog region.
Loling was last reported packing center winds of 70 kilometers per hour and was moving at between 19-20 kilometers per hour in a north-northwesterly direction. It is expected to cross land late tonight or early tomorrow.
