SUPERTYPHOON HITS LUZON TODAY
Manila, Oct. 14, 1998 - Typhoon signal No. 4 today covers Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino and northern Aurora provinces as supertyphoon Iliang (international code name: Zeb) approached land last night with peak winds of 240 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 265 kph.
Iliang was spotted 200 kms east of Casiguran, Aurora at as of 10:00 last night. It is expected to move west northwest at 26 kph toward the Isabela-Cagayan area, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
Storm signal No. 3 was raised over the Ilocos provinces, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra, Mt. Province, Ifugao, La Union, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, southern Aurora, Polilio Island, the Camarines provinces and Catanduanes.
Pangasinan, northern Zambales, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, the rest of Quezon, Burias Island, Albay, Sorsogon, northern Samar, Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna and Batangas were placed under storm signal No. 2.
Storm signal No. 1 was declared over the rest of Luzon, Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, northern Panay and northern Negros.
Weather forecasters said typhoon Iliang is plotted to be over the southern coast of Isabela early today and will cross Northern Luzon toward the South China Sea passing close to Vigan, Ilocos Sur this afternoon.
