PINOY CYCLISTS GAIN INTERNATIONAL RANKING
Manila, Sept. 16, 1998 - Thirteen Filipinos, led by Marlboro Tour champion Warren Davadilla, made it to the Union Cycliste Internationale world rankings.
In the list released last month by the cycling's world governing body, Davadilla ranekd the second best Asian in individual road classification, landing No. 445 with 69 points for his victory in the last Marlboro Tour. With a category 2.5 ranking, the Marlboro Tour is the highest rated multi-stage road race in Asia.
Davadilla trails Japan's Abe Yoshiyuki, the Number 1 Asian, who is at 425th place with 74 points.
Victor Espiritu, 1995 Marlboro Tour champion and runner-up to teammate Davadilla this year, is the second Filipino at No. 639 with 31 points, while Carlo Guieb is 780th with 23 points.
Other Filipinos in the list are: Enrique Domingo (877) 17 points, Santi Barnachea (974) 13, Placido Valdez (1000) 12, Gonzalo Espiritu (1029) 11, Leonardo Basibas (1059) 10, Felix Celeste (1160) 8, Bernard Luzon (1160) 8, Ryan Tanguilig (1216) 7, Virgilio Durain (1272) 6, and Carlo Jasul (1434) 4.
Last year's Marlboro Tour champion, Wong Kam Po of Hong Kong, was ranked 1029 with 11 points.
Laurent Jalabert of France was the world's No. 1 cyclist in the August 9 ratings with 2961 points. Tour de France champion Marco Pantani of Italy came in fourth with 1961.
