406 ATHLETES, 200 OFFICIALS TO ASIAD
Manila, September 8, 1998 - The Philippines is sending 406 athletes and 200 officials to the Asiad this December. This could probably be the country's biggest Asian Games delegation.
Philippine Olympic Committee president Cristy Ramos-Jalasco explained that her office submitted to the Bangkok organizing committee the maximum number which would eventually be reduced to a manageable size.
She also assured that they will not all be funded by the Philippine Sports Commission. The teams financing their own trip to Bangkok are badminton, baseball, women's basketball, equestrian, sepak takraw, tennis, squash and beach volleyball.
She said that all those in the list satisfied the POC's criteria for joining the Asiad. The POC required Asian Games participants to be at least gold or silver medal winners in last year's Southeast Asian Games, or gold, silver or bronze finish in an Asian-level competition, or at least eighth in a legitimate world competition.
