RP DOWNS KOREANS, ENTER JONES CUP FINALS
Taipei, Sept. 5, 1998 - The Philippine Centennial Team overwhelmed Korea, 96-77, to barge into the finals with a clean 5-0 sweep of the elims of the 21st Jones Cup.
"I've never seen a better team effort from the guys," said coach Tim Cone, who kept reminding his wards to "Stay humble, fellas."
The all-professional team's fifth straight win set them up for a finals showdown today with host Chinese-Taipei, which has made it known it will do everything to win for the first time the championship of the tournament it has hosted without fail since 1977.
Chinese-Taipei entered the finals for the first time this year. It's best previous record was fourth placer for three years, the last time being in 1991.
