JONES CUP: RP TEAM SWEEPS ELIMS
Taipei, Taiwan, Sept. 4, 1998 - The PBA Centennial Team won their third and fourth matches, beating Thailand by 50 points Wednesday and Costa Rica by 11 points Thursday, as they sail smoothly into a championship berth in the prestigious 21st R. William Jones Cup International Basketball Tournament at the Taipei Municipal Gym.
The team is preparing to face dark horse host Chinese-Taipei in the 10-nation tourney.
The victory over Costa Rica was the fourth straight for the Nationals, who battle the hosts Friday regardless of the outcome of the Korea vs. Chinese-Taipei matchup at presstime. The Taiwanese, being the hosts, have been seeded into the crossover, knockout semifinals. The other semis pairing pits Japan against Korea and the winners advance to the winner-take-all finals on Saturday.
``I think we have the edge, man-for-man,'' said Centennial Team coach Tim Cone, when asked of his thoughts in the match against Chinese-Taipei. ``but we have to remember that this is their home court and I am appealing to all our Filipino friends here to come out and support this team.''
