HONASAN TO LOOK INTO TNT BOXERS' PLIGHT
Manila, Aug. 31, 1998
- Sen Gringo Honasan vowed to look into the increasing number of Filipino
professional boxers who stay illegally in Japan, with some even disappearing
before their scheduled bouts.
At the same time, Honasan called on the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) to devise measures to arrest this problem as early as possible. According to the Philippine Star, 17 Filipino boxers who became illegal immigrants were arrested and subsequently deported by Japanese immigration officials last year alone.
"It would be unfair to all Filipinos, especially those working in Japan, if we will earn the tag as the country of TNTs," Honasan remarked. Some of these boxers were former international and national boxing champions like former International Boxing Federation mini flyweight titlist Manny Melchor, former Philippine flyweight king Lee Escobido and former Philippine lighweight champ Rey Pelonia.
