P1-M FOR RP ASIAD TEAM FROM CALTEX
Manila, Aug. 25, 1998- The Bangkok-bound Philippine delegation to the Asian Games received a big boost yesterday, in the form of a P1-million donation from the giant oil firm Caltex. The donation was coursed through the Philippine Olympic Committee, and was received by POC president Cristy Ramos Jalasco.
''We are very happy that Caltex has decided to help other teams aside from our boxers,'' said Jalasco after yesterday's signing of Memorandum of Agreement between the sports body and Caltex. Jalasco said the amount given by Caltex will go a long way towards funding the international exposure of Filipino athletes as they prepare for the Games set Dec. 6-20.
Caltex said the donation is largely regarded as ''seed money'' to encourage other corporations to provide support and infuse new vigor and will to win to local athletes.
Caltex had earlier given a grant of P6-million to the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines for the training of local boxers who are regarded as having the brightest chance to win a gold medal in the Asiad.
