PHIL-AM SURFING CHAMP IS DAET BUSINESSMAN
Daet, Camarines Norte, Aug. 25, 1998 - A local businessman-sportsman topped the surfing tournament which capped the First Philippine-American Cultural Exchange at the Madison's Nature Club in Bagasbas Beach, Daet.
Alvin Obusan, the 28-year-old owner of a pizza joint near the beach, drew on his vast experience to overcome the challenge of the rest of the 16-man field and the rushing waves of Bagasbas to cop the title. The tournament was organized by the Surfing Association of the Philippines, Inc. and supported by the Department of Tourism, the Philippine Tourism Authority, the local government, Coffee California, Madison's Nature Club and Hang Ten.
Obusan's victory is the first for the town's surfers since the tournament started four years ago. The tournament was a double victory for the town's surfers as second place went to another local, Allan Cabanella. Third place went to Edmund Mendoza of Baler, Aurora, who was last year's national surfing champion.
Daet Mayor Tito Sarion, chairman of the local organizing committee, said Obusan's victory is a major boost not only for the sport of surfing in his town, but also for the community's tourism potential.
"Alvin's victory will certainly go a long way in promoting Daet as a major surfing site and a tourist attraction as well, for Filipino and foreign surfing enthusiasts," Sarion said.
