PINAY GOLFERS LORD HK JUNIOR OPEN
Hong Kong, Aug. 23, 1998 - Filipina golfers Katrina Gonzales and Carla Ty registered improved scores yesterday to lead their divisions in the 1998 Hong Kong Junior Open golf championship.
Gonzales, a student at the exclusive Poveda Learning Center, toured the par 70 Hong Kong Golf Club's new Fanling course with 109 to top the girls' 11-12 division.
She had earlier scored 115 for a total of 224 to beat Michelle Nunn by a decisive 34 strokes. The Hong Kong opponent struggled with a 123 to finish with 258.
Ty, also a Poveda Learning Center grade school student, played with 114 on Day Two to go with a first day 119 to capture the girls' 10-and-under championship with 233.
Hong Kong's Annabelle Gerber carded 119 and teammate Andrea Gerber fired 126 to take the next two places with 248 and 261.
The girls' victories saved the day for the Philippine team as the Filipino boys struggled and failed to score well in their respective divisions.
