Portland, Oregon, Aug. 18, 1998 - The Philippines started its campaign Sunday in the 1998 Little League Softball Girls' tournament by beating Poland 17-0 at the start of the series at the Alpenrose Dairy Stadium.
The Filipinos will nest meet Canada, which triumphed over Mexico earlier.
The Bacolod-Negros little leaguers, which won the right to represent the country by defeating last year's team from Pampanga, are being hosted by the Filipino community in Oregon.
Coach Guy Fuentes said his young wards are prepared and will do their best to win their assignments in the tournament. Participating in the international sports meet are teams representing Europe, Latin America (Mexico), North America (represented by Waco, Texas), Central America (Ohio), West America (Beaverton, Oregon) and East America (New Jersey).
The Philippines represents the Far East.
The tournament calls for a double elimination format where the team that is beaten twice is automatically eliminated.
