ALASKA WINS PBA CUP
Quezon City, Aug. 15, 1998 - Alaska Milk claimed the PBA Commissioner's Cup Wednesday night, guided by precise shooting of Kenneth Duremdes, Jojo Lastimosa, Johnny Abarrientos and Devin Davis.
The Milkmen claimed their third consecutive PBA Commissioner's Cup by defeating San Miguel Beer, 85-74, in Game 6 of the finals, thus tying the old record set by Toyota, as the third most victorious team in the league.
''Though I won't be here in the third conference, I will be here in spirit and we'll do in the Governors Cup all the things we did in the past two conferences,'' said Alaska coach Tim Cone, who will mentor the Centennial Team in the December Asiad in Bangkok.
''Grand slam is sweet but it has no meaning to me now,'' said Cone. ''We are thinking of the gold in the Asian Games and that's what matters.''
San Miguel fans pelted the Araneta Coliseum floor with coins, ice and plastic cups after the final buzzer in disapproval of the referees' calls.
San Miguel, winner of Games 3 and 4, managed to tie the score at 59 at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Alaskans proved too much for the Beermen.
