PINOY RANKED NO.1 IN WORLD BILLIARDS
Manila, Aug. 14, 1998 - Billiards enthusiasts celebrate the victory of another Filipino champion, Francisco 'Django' Bustamante, who moved up to No. 1 in world ranking after winning the $75,000 Riviera Hotel Pro- 8-Ball Open Championship in Las Vegas.
Bustamante is one of the proteges of Manila sportsmen Jose Puyat and Aristeo Puyat playing in the 8-tournament Camel Series. He smashed his way into the finals after eliminating fellow Pinoy, 4-time world 9-ball champion Efren 'Bata' Reyes.
The Pampangueno, now based in Germany, reached the top by defeating Michael Coltrain 7-0 in the quarter-finals, Jimmy Wetch 7-2 in the semi-finals, and Johnny Archer 7-1 in the finals.
His victory earned Bustamante $15,000 as he leads the pack going into the $60,000 Nashville Pro 9-Ball Open in September.
The $300,000 Camel Series, which opened in Kansas last April, winds up in Ohio in November.
