JAWORSKI MAY HAVE TO GIVE UP COACHING
Manila, Aug. 13, 1998 - Given a choice between Barangay Ginebra and the Senado ng Republika, ace cager and top-rated coach Senator Robert Jaworski will opt for the Senate floor rather than the basketball court.
Jaworski, who was elected to the Senate last May largely on his popularity as a basketball star, told reporters that when his basketball coaching duties for the Ginebra San Miguel team come in conflict with his legislative work, sports will have to be sacrificed.
The neophyte senator has his hands full as chairman of four powerful committees: public works; tourism; public information and mass media; games, amusements and sports.
Senate hearings usually take place in the morning and continue to early afternoon, breaking up when senate sessions begin at 3:00 p.m., except of Thursdays when the sessions begin at 10:00 in the morning.
Jaworski, popularly called 'Jawo' by millions of basketball fans, still hopes to attend at least a few practice sessions with his team.
"Maybe I can still attend practice early in the morning (before the committee hearings begin) and late at night (after the senate sessions adjourn)," he said. "We already have four committees, so we' realize that we have to be here in the Senate to attend to our lawmaking functions."
