PINAY, 15, BAGS GOLD IN US ARCHERY TOURNEY
CANTON, Michigan, Aug. 12, 1998 - Adelinda Figueroa, 15, a senior at D. Paez Integrated School in Tondo, Metro Manila, made her rivals look like twigs in a storm Friday, as she collected a gold medal in the 114th US National Archery Championships in unforgiving fashion as she obliterated the field in the intermediate division.
She shot 275 qnd 259 in the closing two distances, the 60 and 50 meters, and totalled 1669 to beat American Margaret Burns by 57 points.
Canadian Clair Adameyzk was a far third with 1494 and American Michele Marco was fourth with 1492.
The Philippine teams delivered more good news when Jennifer Chan, Marifi Martinez, Purita Joy Marino, Oscar Briones, Christian Cubilla and Michael Facundo punched into the Olympics round, where the top 64 archers from each of the men's and women's divisions tangled in knockout fashion.
