11 GOLDS FOR RP ICE SKATERS IN WORLD MEET
Manila, Aug. 7, 1998 - The Philippine Sports Commission wants to encourage ice skating as a competitive sport which could bring the Philippines more medals in international tournaments.
"It is a sport that does not depend on height and weight advantages, unlike basketball. The Filipino ice skaters are an amazing group, and the sport is fast gaining enthusiasts with the opening of more and more ice skating rinks outside Metro Manila," said Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Butch Tuazon in an interview with Newsflash editor Sol Vanzi
As if to prove Chairman Tuazon correct, the Philippine team to the St. Louis '98 World Team Championships bagged 24 medals, including 11 golds, to rank fourth overall.
Dannadale Cordero sparked the Filipinos' medal splurge with two golds--one in FS 1 and another in solo compulsary. Ivanna Aguiling and Susana Quibol also starred for the RP squad with one individual and one pairs gold each. Aguiling prevailed in footwork and shared a couple spot title with sister Charissa Marie, while Quibol triumphed in FS 2 and in the couple spot together with Karina Ramos.
The other RP gold medallists were Chrissette Ann Antonio (FS2), Louis and Gracielle Asinas (couple spot), Rachel Carasig (footwork), John Ross Solanzo (FS 2) and Ma. Athena Riego (FS 1).
The RP skaters also took 11 silvers and three bronzes. The silver medalists were Christian Cruz with three, Karina Ramos (2), Maries Camaligan (2), Nicollette Constante, Rachel Camaligan, Kilani Dewit, Michael Novales and Aivory Ann Gaw (one each).
Josalyn Alto, Riego and the pair of Maries Camaligan and Riego produced the three RP bronzes.
